CyberMonday 2024: Digital transactions have increased by 15% in the last two years

In 2023, 4.6 million transactions were made on CyberMonday, and this year the figure could exceed 5 million. “Chileans' confidence in electronic means of payment is growing and companies, including banking institutions, have improved their platforms to make them faster and more efficient,” emphasized Pablo Huircapan, director of IT and Operations at Evertec Chile - Peru - Uruguay.

As CyberMonday 2024, to be held from September 30 to October 2, approaches, millions of consumers are already preparing to take advantage of the offers on products and services that will be offered by the more than 700 participating merchants.

This event, which has gained relevance in recent years, has also witnessed a considerable increase in digital transactions, driven by the growing use of new technologies that have simplified payments.

A few years ago it was common for payment platforms to collapse during massive events, such as CyberMonday. Today, the incorporation of new players in the payment system has strengthened the infrastructure, minimizing errors and improving the shopping experience"

According to figures from the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, 4 million transactions were recorded on Cyber Monday in 2022, a figure that grew by 15% in 2023, when 4.6 million e-commerce movements were completed. Huircapan indicated that it is possible that this 2024 the figure will rise above 5 million transactions.

“The increase in transactions reflects the growing confidence of users in payment platforms and in the soundness of banking systems, which have improved significantly in recent years,” said the Evertec executive.

Security recommendations
for CyberMonday 2024

Evertec calls on users to take advantage of the offers, but without neglecting the security of banking data. Given the greater number of payment transactions and the demand of users, it is necessary to be extremely careful and avoid frauds such as phishing or impersonation sites that cybercriminals elaborate on these dates.

To avoid scams, Pablo Huircapan gave a series of security measures that consumers should apply:

  1. Buy on official and reliable sites: Verify that the online store is legitimate. It is preferable to buy on official websites of https://cyber.cl or recognized stores. Also watch out for pop-up windows when shopping.
  2. Check the security padlock (HTTPS): It is key to make sure that the website has an SSL certificate (green padlock and URL starting with “https://”). This indicates that the connection is secure.
  3. Beware of too-good-to-be-true offers: If an offer seems extremely cheap, it is probably a scam. Research average prices before making an impulse purchase and avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails or messages.
  4. Do not share unnecessary personal information: Only provide the information required for the purchase. Do not share sensitive personal information or passwords.
  5. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for purchases: Online purchases should not be made using public Wi-Fi networks, as they can be insecure and vulnerable to hacker attacks.
  6. Use secure payment methods: Opt for credit cards or secure platforms that offer protection to the buyer. Avoid direct bank transfers or payments through money transfer services that do not offer security.
  7. It is key to verify the seller’s return policies and terms: Before making a purchase, you should make sure that the store offers clear and fair return policies. Find out if they have reliable customer service.
  8. Monitor your account statements: It is important to review account statements regularly after making online purchases to detect any unauthorized charges and report them immediately.
  9. Research other users’ opinions: If you are unsure, it is best to read reviews and comments from other shoppers to verify the store’s reputation. Sites with too many negative comments or no information can be a red flag.

These recommendations will help you reduce risks and enjoy a safer shopping experience during CyberMonday, protecting your finances and taking advantage of the offers in a responsible way.
